The short answer
To shop at a recreational dispensary in New Jersey you need to be 21 or older and bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. You don't need a medical card or New Jersey residency. A budtender walks you through the menu, and state rules cap how much you can buy in one transaction.
Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel a little like showing up to a party where everyone else already knows the dance. Good news: there's no dance. There's a counter, a menu, and a person whose whole job is answering your questions. Here's the rundown.
What do I need to bring?
Bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, like a driver's license, state ID, or passport. Staff check every ID to confirm you're 21 or older before any sale. That's state law, not us being nosy.
- You do not need a medical marijuana card to shop recreational (adult-use).
- You do not need to be a New Jersey resident. Visitors 21+ with valid ID are welcome.
- New Jersey rules limit what a retailer can collect about you. We look at your ID to confirm age and identity, and we don't keep a copy of it.
How does ordering work?

How much can I buy at once?
New Jersey caps a single sales transaction. Under the Cannabis Regulatory Commission's rules (N.J.A.C. 17:30), a retailer can't sell one consumer more than:
- 28.35 grams (one ounce) of usable cannabis (flower)
- 4 grams of solid concentrate, or 4 mL of liquid concentrate (oil)
- A vape formulation containing more than 4 mL of liquid concentrate
- Edibles adding up to more than 1,000 mg of THC in total
- One ounce, or the equivalent, of any combination of the above
